Small Catio Ideas for Michigan Homes

A small outdoor space can still give your cat a place to sniff the breeze, stretch out, and watch the garden. The most useful small catio starts with a good access point and a layout your cat can comfortably use.

Start with the window, door, or porch you already use

Look at where your cat spends time indoors. A nearby window may make a compact enclosure easier to introduce than a structure at the far end of the yard. Check how the window opens, where the sill sits, and whether an insert or tunnel would interfere with ventilation, maintenance, or an emergency exit. Access details need to be resolved before choosing the enclosure’s dimensions.

Three small catio layouts to consider

Window catio: a contained perch outside a suitable window, with enough room to turn around and rest. Its supports need to carry the enclosure and its occupants; ordinary insect screening is not the containment system.

Narrow deck catio: a longer enclosure along an outside wall can leave room for people to pass. Reserve space for a cleaning door and keep the cat enclosure separate from required walking routes.

Compact walk-in catio: a modest ground-level footprint can accommodate several resting levels. Leave open floor area and make every shelf reachable without a difficult jump.

Use height without making the layout difficult

Place resting platforms at different levels, but avoid filling every wall. Cats need room to turn, pass one another, and retreat. For an older or less mobile cat, discuss shorter steps, broad landings, and a lower resting route. A tall tower with one narrow path can be less usable than a simpler enclosure with several choices.

Plan for shade, drainage, and cleaning

Watch the proposed location at different times of day. Afternoon sun can change how comfortable a small space feels. Plan shade, a dry resting area, and a way back indoors. Keep runoff away from the access point, and make sure you can reach every corner to clean and inspect mesh, fasteners, and door gaps.

How small is too small?

There is no single footprint that suits every cat. Consider the cat’s body size, mobility, time spent outside, and whether cats will share the space. An outdoor perch supplements indoor living; it should not become a place where a cat is confined without room to move or retreat.

Planning a small catio in Southeast Michigan

Michigan Catio Builders designs custom spaces in Rochester Hills, Oakland County, Metro Detroit, and Southeast Michigan. Send photos of the proposed opening, approximate dimensions, and information about your cats. We can discuss whether a window enclosure, deck layout, or larger walk-in design is a better starting point.
